GOP House Members Send Obama Letter Asking Him To Reinstate 'Conscience' Rule
House GOP members on Tuesday sent a letter to President Obama praising him for saying that he wants to "honor the conscience of those who disagree with abortion" during his commencement address at the University of Notre Dame last weekend, The Hill reports. The Republican lawmakers -- Reps. James Sensenbrenner (Wis.), Chris Smith (N.J.) and John Fleming (La.) -- said Obama"s speech indicated to them that he would reinstate the HHS provider "conscience" rule, which expanded the ability of health workers to refuse to provide services or information they objected to on moral or religious grounds and prohibited federal funding for health entities that do not comply. In March, Obama began the process for rescinding the Bush-era rule, and it is currently undergoing a White House review. In the letter, the representatives said that they "agree with [Obama] that pro-life health care providers should have the right to refuse to participate in procedures that they find morally reprehensible." Smith said he has "renewed hope, hopefully not false" that Obama will "completely forgo the rescinding of this rule" after his remarks during Sunday"s speech (Hooper, The Hill, 5/19).

What Are Condoms? How To Use a Condom
There are two types of condoms; male and female. A condom is a barrier contraceptive - it blocks the route a sperm would take to fertilize an egg. They can be made from latex rubber, polyurethane, or lambskin. According the NHS (National Health Service, UK), males condoms are 98% effective against pregnancy if used correctly, while female condoms are about 95% effective. Nobody is sure what the origin of the English word "condom" is. There were rumors that Dr. Condom invented the condom for King Charles II of England. However, it is most likely that Dr. Condom, otherwise known as The Earl of Condom, never existed - also, condoms were around long before that period. Most likely the name comes from the Italian word guantone, which comes from the Italian word guanto, meaning "glove".

Sepracor Provides Update On Clinical Trials For SEP-225289 And LUNESTA(R) Pediatrics
Sepracor Inc. (Nasdaq: SEPR) announced that it has completed the analysis and validation of the preliminary results of a Phase II, 514-patient study evaluating the efficacy and safety of SEP-225289 for the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder, including patients with melancholic and atypical features. Sepracor determined that SEP-225289 did not meet the primary efficacy endpoint, which was a reduction in symptoms of depression following eight weeks of treatment, as assessed using the clinician-rated, 17-item HAM-D scale (Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, a standard scale used to assess depression in clinical trials and consisting of a list of symptoms commonly associated with depression). The positive control in the study (venlafaxine extended-release) did achieve separation from placebo that was statistically significant on the primary endpoint.

Pioneering Research Benefits The West Midlands, UK

Top researchers from the West Midlands are working to improve the treatment of conditions that affect millions of people. Across the region research into areas such as osteoarthritis, joint pain and sciatica, stroke prevention and treatment, community care for people living with diabetes, and the treatment of liver disease have received a real boost over the last three years. The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) is bringing together the region"s health researchers to work in partnership with the NHS. As a result there are more scientific studies now being conducted in this part of the country than ever before. More scientists - based in universities like Birmingham, Coventry and Warwick - are joining forces with local NHS trusts and patients to develop new treatments which can be translated quickly into better care. Today Professor Dame Sally C. Davies, Director General of Research and Development at the Department of Health addressed a conference of 300 health researchers from the West Midlands region where she talked about the progress that had been made since the National Institute for Health Research was launched in 2006. She also thanked them for their role in translating research activity into real benefits for patients, the public and the NHS. She said: "When we launched the NIHR, we knew what we wanted to achieve and understood what we had to do to get there. We could see the huge potential for improving, expanding and strengthening the way that health research is delivered for patients, the public and the NHS. Today"s report entitled Delivering health research explains how we are delivering the vision first set out in the Government"s health research strategy: Best Research for Best Health. By working together across the NHS, and with patients, the best health research academic institutions in the country and industry, we are delivering that promise." The aim of NIHR funded research is to find and evaluate treatments for patients across the spectrum of medical settings, so that people receive better care when they need it. The NIHR only funds studies where there is a clear link to the quality of patient care. The result is that more NHS patients are benefitting from leading edge research. The NIHR approach, which has been developed over the last three years, is helping to bring together the research community and creating more opportunities for patients to be involved in trials to develop new treatments. All of this work is highlighted in a new report published by the National Institute for Health Research, entitled Delivering Health Research. Department of Health, UK
