CHMP Recommends Expanded Use Of ISENTRESS(R) (raltegravir), From MSD, In Adult Patients With HIV-1 Infection
Merck, Sharp & Dohme (MSD) received a positive opinion from the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) recommending expanded marketing authorisation for ISENTRESS® (raltegravir) in combination with other antiretroviral (ARV) medicinal products for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in all appropriate adult patients, including patients starting HIV therapy for the first time (treatment-naç¯ve), as well as treatment-experienced patients. The positive opinion will be reviewed by the European Commission, which grants marketing authorisation to the 27 countries that are members of the European Union (EU), as well as Iceland and Norway.

Blue Cross And Blue Shield Of North Carolina 'Double-Crossing' Obama With Attack Ads, Krugman Says
"Less than two weeks" after health industry interest groups pledged to work with President Obama on health reform, "the double-crossing is already well under way" as Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina prepares a series of ads criticizing a public plan option that might be included in health reform legislation, New York Times columnist Paul Krugman writes. Krugman says, "The medical-industrial complex has called the president"s bluff," adding, "It polished its image by showing up ... and promising cooperation, then promptly went back to doing all it can to block real change." According to Krugman, "The insurers and the drug companies are, in effect, betting that Obama will be afraid to call them out on their duplicity." He concludes, "It"s up to Obama to prove them wrong" (Krugman, New York Times, 5/22).

New Cases Of Alzheimer's And Dementia Continue To Rise, Even In The 'Oldest Old'

The number of people with Alzheimer"s and dementia - both new cases and total numbers with the disease - continues to rise among the very oldest segments of the population in contradiction of the conventional wisdom, according to research reported at the Alzheimer"s Association 2009 International Conference on Alzheimer"s Disease (ICAD 2009) in Vienna. Previous epidemiological studies have suggested that the number of people with Alzheimer"s and dementia begins to level off and perhaps even go down a bit in people age 90 and above, known as the "oldest old." This is the fastest growing segment of the population in western countries. "The number of people affected by Alzheimer"s and dementia is growing at an epidemic pace, and the skyrocketing financial and personal costs will devastate the world"s economies and healthcare systems, and far too many families," said William Thies, Ph.D., Chief Medical & Scientific Officer at the Alzheimer"s Association. "We must make the fight against Alzheimer"s a priority before it"s too late." "However there is hope. There are many drugs in late stage clinical trials for Alzheimer"s that show promise to slow or stop the progression of the disease. This, combined with advancements in early detection, has the potential to change the landscape of Alzheimer"s in our lifetimes. But we need more funding for research to see these possibilities through to completion," Thies said.
