From Oxygen Transport To Melanin Formation: Activation Mechanism Of Key Enzymes Explained
Pandinus imperator, the emperor scorpion, is not only popular as a pet, but is also of interest for research purposes. The reason for this is its blue blood, which transports oxygen and distributes it throughout the body. Like tyrosinase, the key enzyme in melanin synthesis, the blue blood pigment hemocyanin found in the emperor scorpion and other arthropods belongs to a group of special molecules that occur in all organisms and that have many different functions: coloring the skin, hair and eyes, immune response, wound healing or the brown discoloration of fruit. "When these enzymes mutate, this may result in albinism, or in birth marks when production of the pigment melanin increases, as often seen in melanoma," explains Professor Heinz Decker of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. The biophysicist has been studying hemocyanins and the associated tyrosinases for the past 20 years. In cooperation with researchers, Dr. Cong and Dr. Chiu, from the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston he has now been able to show for the first time exactly how the enzymes become active, thereby fulfilling their various functions. This work was published in the journal Structure on 13 May.

Lilly funds the program, which is designed and run by research firm Comprehensive NeuroScience, Inc. (CNS) at the sole direction and guidance of state Medicaid departments. The BPM, which has been executed in more than half of the states, has won a variety of national awards, including the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Science and Service Award, URAC Silver Award for Best Practices in Consumer Empowerment and Protection, American Psychiatric Association Bronze Achievement Award and Disease Management Association of America Gold Award.

NACDS Retail Advisory Board Explores Social Networking Opportunities To Engage Consumers

The Retail Advisory Board (RAB) of the National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) met yesterday during the 2009 NACDS Marketplace Conference to discuss social networking opportunities within their businesses. A presentation by Pete Blackshaw, executive vice president with Nielsen Online Digital Strategic Services outlined how retailers and suppliers can use consumer-generated media, such as blogs, social networking pages, and message boards, to communicate company or product information, as well as build web forums for open communication between companies and their customers that are relevant and timely. Blackshaw shared insights with attendees about the growing utilization of social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and other blogs and message boards as a new way of communicating with consumers. "We appreciate the Retail Advisory Board exploring this new medium, which is evolving into a critical communication tool for reaching the industry"s consumers and gaining a better understanding of consumer trends and interests," said NACDS President and CEO, Steven C. Anderson, IOM, CAE. The NACDS Retail Advisory Board is comprised of cross section of retailers and manufacturers. Its mission is to advise and provide recommendations to the NACDS Board of Directors on timely industry issues affecting the broad NACDS membership base, thereby promoting changes and enhancements that further increases NACDS" value to its members.
