Celgene Announces Positive Top Line Data From Randomized Controlled Phase II Study Of Apremilast In Psoriatic Arthritis
Celgene Corporation (NASDAQ: CELG) announced the preliminary results of a phase II, multi-center, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, three-arm study of apremilast - a novel, orally available small molecule that exhibits anti- inflammatory activities through the suppression of multiple pro-inflammatory mediators and cytokines - in adult patients with psoriatic arthritis (CC-10004-PSA-001). The study met its primary objective of assessment of ACR20 at 12 weeks. ACR20 is defined as the percentage of patients achieving a 20% or better improvement according to the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria. ACR20 is the primary assessment utilized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for assessment of efficacy in psoriatic arthritis, as well as rheumatoid arthritis.

Research Investigates The Treatment Of Traumatic Brain And Head Injury
The National Institute for Health Research Health Technology Assessment (NIHR HTA) programme is expanding the evidence base surrounding the treatment of traumatic brain and head injury (TBI) by commissioning four new research projects. If left untreated many patients with head injury will rapidly develop complications which may lead to death or permanent disability. More than 100,000 people in the UK have long-term effects caused by such injuries. Prompt medical treatment may prevent the worsening of symptoms and lead to a better outcome.

Merger Of PMETB With GMC Moves Closer, UK

The process of achieving the merger of the Postgraduate Medical Education Training Board (PMETB) with the General Medical Council (GMC) has taken a significant step forward with the launch of Department of Health (England) consultation document and draft legislation. Subject to the outcome of the consultation and Parliamentary scrutiny, the legislation will transfer the functions of PMETB to the GMC by April 2010. The GMC and PMETB fully support the merger which will mean that for the first time there will be a single UK body responsible for regulating all stages of medical education from entry to medical school until retirement from practice.
